It's no secret that the lovey-dovey couples will be out enjoying romantic, candlelit dinners, so the rest of y'all come on down to Blues Moon Radio where we'll be celebrating singledom, lamenting a bit about lost loves, cheating sweeties, broken-hearted Blues, lost dawgs and things that just plain didn't turn out right.

But we're not BITTER.

Nope. We're just wryly, observationally less enthused about romance than some others we might know. And your pals at Blues Moon Radio have the song lists to prove it.

Join me, and we'll have a real fine time. No fancy candles necessary.

It was shocking to me that only 30 people attended Hubert Sumlin's funeral. I would have thought the closest one could get would be the church parking lot, if even that close.

Let's hope we don't lose this music along with its originators, except in the historic sense - my fear is that this writer is right on target.

The 33rd Blues Music Awards will be Thursday May 10, 2012 at the Cook Convention Center in Memphis, Tennessee.

Major funding is provided by ArtsMemphis and the Tennessee Arts Commission.
The 33rd Blues Music Awards are sponsored by Blue Mountain Artists, BMI, Catfood Records, Eagle Rock Entertainment, FedEx, First Tennessee Foundation, Gibson Foundation, Legendary Rhythm & Blues Cruise, Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company and Sony/Legacy Records.
Once again, The Blues Music Awards will be broadcast live in their entirety on Sirius XM's B.B. King's Bluesville. The next best thing to being there. They will be broadcast on public television later in the year.

The 2012 show will follow the format of the critically-acclaimed shows of recent years. Close to 100 nominees attend and the night is filled with their appearances and performances in a cabaret/dinner setting in the Convention Center's ballroom.

The event brings together Blues performers, industry representatives and fans from all over the world to celebrate the best in Blues recordings and performances from the previous year. Each year, the Foundation presents The Blues Music Awards to the artists selected by its members. They are universally recognized as the highest honor given to Blues artists. As always, a pre-party will immediately precede the Awards.

Great news! Our dear friend and SC Blues luminary, the right Reverend Marv Ward, has just finished his new CD for release in early 2012 (I think you can listen and download now, though)... here's the link to his FB music store!

Marv hails from the northeastern part of the USA, but has graced the capital city of South Carolina with his presence for many years.

He has opened for a long list of headliners with his unique style that emulates "that high, lonesome sound." As a member of some of Columbia SC's seminal Blues bands, such as Blues DeVille and Congaree, Marv has proven his capacity to work in several genres (rockin' hot Blues to Piedmont/Delta style duos) and he commands a solo stage admirably, too, as a regular performer at Utopia Food and Spirits. His sound ranges to include a folksy, Americana style. He's much like the songsters of old, such as Lead Belly, who could boast a wide range of styles to suit an array of audiences.

Blues Moon Radio listeners are enthralled with Marv's entertaining stories and songs each time he comes on the radio to play live, so we look forward to another visit in early 2012 when we will debut his new CD. Ms. DeLune is a writer, historian, artist, counselor, university administrator and public relations practitioner who has taught upper level music appreciation courses at the Unversity of South Carolina, including Blues History, Rock and Roll History, Jump/Swing/Boogie-Woogie, and Women in Popular Music of the 20th Century. She has contributed numerous articles and chapters to numerous books and periodicals and endeavors to make the show historical, informative, empathic and entertaining. In her spare time, she trains horses and works to help rescue animals who are abandoned or abused.

Tonight's show will be the last Blues Moon Radio Show of the year. We'll rejoin your lives (already in progress) in mid-January - please stay tuned to the blog and FB page for a specific date).

We mourn the loss of so many of our elder statesmen of the Blues this year... most recently a fine fellow named Hubert Sumlin, who got his start with Howlin' Wolf, then got a "better offer" from Muddy Waters... only to ask Wolf to take him back a year later, which he did. Sumlin shared with me that he used to crawl into the gigs through the bathrooom windows of venues because he was too young to get in; and looked too young to be snuck in even as a member of the band. Sumlin was always smiling, every time we met, and always had an upbeat and positive attitude. He has played with the greats, and he turned around and shared his knowledge with the up-and-coming Blues greats through the past three decades.

He had just passed his landmark 80th birthday on Nov. 16th... but was reportedly too ill to play and passed away, in his sleep, Sunday morning, Dec. 4th in the wee wee hours.

He will be missed terribly by so many, me among them. I hope his friends, colleagues, loved ones and those who knew him better than I, will find comfort in how well he was loved and admired by so many across the globe.

And Blues Heaven expands to fit in another landmark great man in the best Blues band ever assembled.

We will pay tribute to Hubert Sumlin, one of the Bluesmen I most admired, at the top of the first hour. Then we'll move to some of the nominees for Best of 2011 - and you all are welcomed to comment on this page to vote for your faves... you can vote for multiple people - there are 20 slots for "Best of 2011"... so if you'd like to submit a rating for your top three or five, that will work fine!

Howdy, y'all... yes, this is the Blues Moon Radio Playlist post for Tuesday Nov. 15, 2011:

I don't usually get personal on my Blues page, but some of you - esp my FB pals - know that one of my earliest and strongest passions besides music is horses.

I have been fortunate to learn from some great horsemen and women and have had a parallel career "retraining" horses who are considered "unmanageable" or "dangerous." My sense is that few if any animals are truly bad-tempered, they just have been treated or trained poorly, and I work to rescue them from a downward slide.

So I am asking my listeners and Blues pals this: please pray for Kee, the Red Horse, aka: (affectionately) Stinkerbell"... who is in terrible trouble and who has such a big heart. This show is dedicated to all things horse and red because he is a hot little chestnut with as much spirit as any horse I've ever trained. I've been working with him for four years and he recently experienced a life-threatening problem that is breaking my heart and might take him from us. I love this rambunctious bit of equine TNT so much it is hard to imagine because he started out as the least reachable (read that as meanest, most dangerous) horse I've ever worked with and is now such a sweetie pie and fine riding horse.

Kee is critically ill, and although he is valiantly struggling to make it - I think because he knows he finally has a safe home where he is loved and treated very well - it will be a long haul to recovery, if he can even recover.

His owner - who adores animals as much as I do - plucked Kee out of the downward spiral of the "last chance" sales, where Kee had been several times, with his bad habits passed along to the next unsuspecting owner, and she and I have worked despite personal frustration and a string of Kee-induced injuries to bring this fella into the light of happiness and good treatment and is to be commended for her dedication and concern for this former "throwaway."

She and the vet and the farrier and I are working hard and expending lots of resources so this little equine tornado might beat the odds, which are against us right now, so all prayers and good thoughts are very much appreciated.

Headlining the Columbia Blues Fest this year is Leo Kottke, who tells wonderful tales with his dextrous fingers. Blues Moon Radio highlights Blues Fests on the horizon in South Carolina

This Saturday! The 17th Annual Columbia (SC) Blues Festival in Martin Luther King Park in Five Points, Columbia SC - FREE!

The Blues Moon will feature artists from this upcoming fest on Tuesday evening, Oct. 18 (see post above this one for details). Here is the lineup:

FREE concert brought to you by the fine folks at Word of Mouth Productions (WOMP), whom we thank, with a special tip of the Blues fedora to Geoffrey Graves. WOMP is a group of hard-working volunteers who are dedicated to sharing the best possible music at no charge, whenever possible, with the public. The Columbia Blues Festival remains FREE, but please thank a volunteer or two for their hard work and support the festival by purchasing food and drink from the vendors, buying tee-shirts from the Word of Mouth Productions tent, and support the artists who entertain you by purchasing their music and wares.

Note: there will be a tribute to the Muddy Waters' Band in tonight's show in honor of Willie "Big Eyes" Smith who passed away this week of a stroke.

Our hearts go out to his family, friends and many devoted fans. We are awed by his contribution to music and for being in the most influential Chicago Blues Band of all time.

End of an era ... Blues Moon Radio for Tuesday, August 30, 2011

Tuesday's show contained old and new music and was tinged with a great deal of sadness because of the death of every Blues fan's friend: the last living original Delta Bluesman, David "Honeyboy" Edwards, who went to his maker as he rested peacefully early Monday morning in Chicago.

As difficult as it is to learn of the passing of someone whom one has met and admired, there is additional grief at the end of an era. We paid tribute to Honeyboy by playing some of his songs and stories on Blues Moon Radio.

I've had the rare pleasure of seeing Honeyboy play live a number of times and the absolute thrill of meeting him and interviewing him once, as well. I was scheduled to see him again late last winter. I awoke sick that morning, but still made the four-hour drive to North Carolina to see him in Chapel Hill. By showtime, I was in misery - made worse by the fact that Honeyboy had canceled the show because of health issues, but the venue had not notified ticket holders of the cancellation. They refunded our money and I remarked to my companion that I hoped this did not bode ill for Honeyboy's ability to continue to appear and play. I never regretted my decision to "bottle up and go," as it were, to the town near where that song originated, but I paid dearly for my decision to muddle through - I was seriously ill and mostly bedridden for two months afterwards and coughed constantly for two more.

Sadly, the cancellation did bode ill for Honeyboy. He canceled shows for health reasons all through the spring. His retirement from touring was announced a scant couple of weeks before his death. That was the second feeling of dread I experienced. I fervently hoped he had regained his health and was going to spend his time as he wished, with none of the road-weary travel that is so much the part of the life of a Bluesman.

Alas, he never played live again and didn't live much longer... but let's think... how many of us love what we do so much that it would bring us joy to work until the very last of our lives? And how wonderful to live to the age of 96 with such good health that we could work until the few months before passing?

That is a success story - and for a person who was raised in a time when money was so hard to come by; and in a profession that is closest to farming in terms of being "feast or famine" income-wise... he was a "rock-star" of Blues. Honeyboy never seemed to seek the spotlight, but oh-so-many knew of him and about him. I have never heard an unkind word about the man. He was unassuming and small in stature, but HUGE in heart. He filled a room with his smile and his music.

So - how is it we can be so sad at the end of such a wonderful life? Because when we love, we want more. We never want that person to go away; and we love the Blues as well as the original Bluesmen. Honeyboy was among the last of this musical treasure trove who brought us this wonderful, uniquely American music that has become an ambassador for the USA in a time where our country's honor could use a little shining up.

When the tears fall, they fall for us... not for Honeyboy ... who LIVED a LIFE as big as a mountain - he learned guitar from Tommy Johnson (who influenced Charley Patton, who influenced Robert Johnson) and was close with Robert Johnson, and told me that he was surely one of the last to see him alive - the day before he passed away. He was one of the lone icons left of what was and can never be again.

Music moves on; genres change, ebb and flow and sometimes go quiet. We cannot recreate what was... only be inspired by it to make the music that must come next. It might be good, but it will never be the same.

Relaxed, refreshed and ready to go!

I spent the time off helping others, getting some major agendas achieved and listening to lots of new music, so Tuesday's show will be filled with fresh content - while the focus of Blues Moon Radio is primarily historical, we lean toward new music in the late summer and early fall as we move into promotion for the Fall Blues Festival season.

Speaking of Blues Fests, there are some humdingers in the region and we will do a story on each of the best fests as we get closer to the time for them (they usually roll out regionally beginning in mid-Sept through late October).

So, I'm glad to be coming back to the studio at WUSC-FM and HD-1 Columbia (SC) where we have a live show, that also streams. We are in our 22nd year, and for those of you who might not be longtime listeners, I have hosted the show (then called simply The Blues Show, which predated the start of The Blues Moon) since 1990. I taught courses at the University of South Carolina in Blues History and Appreciation; History of Rock and Roll; Women in Popular Music of the 20th Century; and Jump, Swing and Boogie-Woogie. WUSC is chartered as an educational station, so we have a vested interest in educational programming and a desire to serve the public's interest.

Again, we are a terrestrial station, fully licensed through the FCC, and we were the second station in the nation to stream over the internet... you can tune in the station (which features alternative programming) world-wide at: http://wusc.sc.edu where you can also find the station schedule. The Carolinas ‘Get Lucky’

(COLUMBIA, S.C.) One of the Carolinas’ newest residents, musician Laurence “Luckyman” Beall, is touring the region and spreading good luck to all who are fortunate enough to see and hear his music.

The Carolinas “got Lucky” when Beall relocated to the Midlands area of South Carolina recently after a short stop in Huntsville, Alabama, where he recorded his well-received CD, “Laurence ‘Luckyman’ Beall: The Huntsville Sessions.” Although he collaborated on the production of that CD, his recent tour showcases him solo – which allows Beall to interact with his audiences to their amusement and delight. So, now we are the lucky ones.

Sporting the Western-style dress and duck-tail hairstyle that emerged when Rock’n’Roll was young, Beall (pronounced ‘Bell’) is as serious about the audience enjoying themselves as he is about his music – a mix of Blues, Rockabilly and Americana that would get any mule kicking in its stall.

At the 11th annual Greenwood Blues Cruise last weekend, attendees cruised from one venue to another sampling the Blues acts and stopping to be rocked to their socks by the Luckyman, who incites the crowd with banter and stories between rip-roaring numbers.

“The Deacon: Laurence ‘Luckyman’ Beall, is alive and well here at the "Tabernacle Of The Good Luck Gospel,” Bell shouted out, as if a barker for a potion for what ails you – that is, if what ails you is a need for some good luck and that good luck is shepherded to one through exposure to his high-energy music.

“You can learn about right and wrong and good and evil at church. You can learn about the three ‘Rs’ of readin’, ’ritin’ and ’rithmetic in school,” Beall shouts out between songs. “But the only place you can learn about increasing your good luck exponentially is at the ‘Tabernacle of the Good Luck Gospel!’”

Those who see Beall perform are impressed and charmed by his vibrant personality as well as his intense musicianship, comprised of powerful lyrics and melody, and a unique approach to electric chicken-pickin’ guitar work. Clair DeLune, host of Blues Moon Radio, has become an enthusiastic convert to “the Luckified.”

“After I learned about Lucky being in the area, I booked him on The Blues Moon Radio Show as soon as possible,” DeLune said. “His performance was so popular that listeners called in with compliments and requests for weeks.”

Beall emancipated himself at the “ripe old age of 15” and has been touring as a self-supporting musician ever since. His travels have included pickup jobs off stage as well as on. Some jobs had the unanticipated “benefit” of becoming source material for songs. Beall writes most of his material from experiences – either personal or because he is a keen observer of life.

“You have to jump on those life moments that come your way,” Beall said. “I’ve learned to keep a pencil and paper handy so I don’t lose a great song idea. ‘She Make a Bulldog Break His Chain’ was something a co-worker uttered about a particularly attractive sunbather who was viewable from our job site, so I had to run to my truck to write the song down just the way he said it before that inspiration was lost.”

Blues Moon Radio Interview with Roy Rogers Tuesday, July 12, 2011

I'm excited about tonight's show... we were honored to be asked to interview Roy Rogers by the fine folks at Blind Pig Records, who bring us so many great artists. Roy collaborated with The Doors' keyboardist, Ray Manzarek, for Translucent Blues, which is decidedly a departure from straight Blues, but one I think Blues and Rock fans alike will enjoy.

Roy and I chatted about his roots and early beginnings, and started our interview - off the record - talking about his name and the inevitable associations with Roy Rogers, the singing cowboy. Interestingly, my show co-host, RockyDawg-BluesDefender, who is usually silent in the recording studio, barked up a storm during our interview - in such a way that I had to decide between his "voice-over" staying on or losing some great content by Roy. The singing cowboy Roy had a German Shepherd named Bullet, and I cannot help but find the humor in the fact that the only time my German Shepherd interrupted a recording was for Roy Rogers, the Blues slide guitar legend. I probably should have distinguished the two for RockStar... :) I expect he thought he was just sayin' "howdy" to Bullet's Dad! I'll do better with my prep in the future, but enjoy the barking... and Roy's response.

The show will kick off with some music with a theme of leaving; we'll try to fit in some birthday tributes and we'll hear from Roy and from the new CD, as well as from some of his biggest influences - Bo Diddley, Robert Johnson and John Lee Hooker (he produced four of The Hook's albums, btw, and knew him well - perhaps we can chat with him more about those experiences another time).

The show starts at 6, and the interview will air around 7 p.m. EDT/USA - in most countries that is -5 GMT.

LLBeall is that rare mix of Blues, Country, Rockabilly, Roots and Rock done in a way that hits the rusty nail on the head as it bangs in that ornery plank on the old barn. Tonight after the gig, Utopia's Blues Jam; remember Sunday nights at The House in Five Points and Ott Saloon in Lexington on Mondays... every other Wednesday is the Sparkle City Jam at Decisions, where they also hold an acoustic jam on Mondays (again, check those venues before you go).

Good evening... we have an interview with Scott Cable, of Charlotte N.C., who produced Damon Fowler's newest CD. He will be giving Blues artists and musicians tips on some success tactics for the the business and production sides of music. I'm very pleased with his interview and think you will be, too.

Thanks so much to Shelley and Ace of The Delta Swagger for capping off a wonderful Women's History month project - filled with so much insight about the differences for women in music in today's touring world. Vive la difference! Their new CD is smokin'.

I especially want to thank Shirley King, "The Daughter of the Blues" for her warm and wonderful insights on that topic as well. The aspect of being a legacy, as the daughter of foremost living Bluesman B.B. King, comes with the common perception that she has had her musical career wrapped up with a bow and given to her, ready made. Shirley's father worked for his success and he sounds like my Dad... who wanted me to work for mine. B.B. wanted his daughter to work for hers - providing guiding hands and heart, but Shirley's career success is her own! I had a great time emceeing the very successful and professionally run Sparkle City Blues Jam at New Decades in Spartanburg, S.C. last Wednesday. Was impressed with the club, the amazing array of females who arrived to sing: Chocolate Thunder, Jean Calvert (see her great bios from her guest host stint earlier this month on Blues Moon Radio), Wanda Johnson, Shontell Babb and Fayssoux Starling McLean were in the house! The menfolk did a great job of rockin that Blues house, too! Special thanks to Ms. She D'Ambrosio, who invited me to host the last week of Women's History Month, for keeping the Blues alive in the Upstate and putting on a very professional event - we have some world-class talent in South Carolina and She keeps it rolling smoooooothly - more like a concert than a free jam. Excellent.

Vic Scaricamazza played drums on one set and got so inspired, he came right back to Cola-Town and invented an organization for Midlands Blues (sadly lacking in the past decade or so) called Columbia Blues Mob - it's a group on Facebook that is intended to support our local Blues Jam in Columbia - newly hosted by the New Utopia on Rosewood Drive in the Jim Casey Complex (not all the fireworks will be Jim's this Tuesday!) and to bring together a spot (online and in person) where Blues fans and musicians can meet and push the Blues scene forward. Eventually the goal is to link up with the Lowcountry and Upstate Blues groups; then interact with regional Blues interest groups to form a stronger Regional Blues presence. All are welcome to join in!

The Blues Jam features core group members, Doug Allen, Cleve Edwards, Vic... and many many more... check the group page for info about the management of it. As a Blues dj, I just play records... you won't see me up on that stage (and you thank me for that, I know!)

Thanks to my guest host, Jazz and Blues singer, Jean Calvert who will be sharing historical information about tonight's roster of fabulous Blues babes!

We'll start with Victoria Spivey:

Victoria Spivey 1908 - 1976 Any-Kind-A-Man

Victoria was a prolific songwriter, pianist, and singer who produced over 1500 songs. Ida Cox was her role model. She was in the first black talking film. She was consistently working in the late 1920s and through the 1930s when most blues women's careers were sagging. She performed in vaudeville musical revues, including the acclaimed Hellzapoppin' Revue in New York City and recorded and toured with Louis Armstrong and his Orchestra. Victoria left the business in the 1950s, but returned in 1962 with her own record label, Spivey Records. Her first record employed Bob Dylan as an accompanist. She performed and recorded through the rest of her life.

Sippie Wallace 1898 - 1986 (aka The Texas Nightingale) - I'm a Mighty Tight Woman

Possibly a cousin to Victoria Spivey, the two were definitely good friends. Sippie’s career spanned seven decades. Her brother George is credited with creating the boogie-woogie piano style. Bonnie Raitt produced and played on her album in 1981. The album was nominated for a Grammy in 1983, and won the W.C. Handy "Blues Album of the Year" in 1983.

Bessie Smith 1895 - 1937 (aka The Empress of the Blues) - Young Woman's Blues

Although she was the daughter of a Baptist preacher, Bessie became a rough-and-tumble woman. Young Bessie and her brother became a busking duo on the streets of Chattanooga after their parents died. In 1904, an older brother left without a word and joined a traveling troupe. He returned in 1912 with the Stokes troupe, which hired Bessie as a dancer because they already had Ma Rainey as their singer. Ma became her mentor and Bessie remained with with the troupe until 1915. She was suggested as the singer for the first recorded Blues record, but the job went to Mamie Smith because Bessie was considered "too dark." She then joined the TOBA (Theater Owners Booking Agency), built up her own following and became the highest paid black artist of the 1920s. A career downturn during the depression was followed by a brief comeback that ended when she died in a car crash in 1937.

Clara Smith 1984 - 1935 - Don't Advertise Your Man

Clara (aka Queen of the Moaners, in spite of her light, sweet voice) was born in Spartanburg, SC, but not much is known of her early life. In the 1910s, she was a headliner in New Orleans at the Lyric Theater, on the TOBA circuit. She moved to New York in 1923, and to Detroit in 1933. She and Bessie Smith were not related, but were close personal friends --- until Bessie got drunk one evening in 1925 and beat Clara up! Incidentally, Clara gave 13-year-old Josephine Baker a job as her dresser on tour.
Mamie Smith 1883 - 1946 - What Have You Done to Make Me Feel This Way?
Mamie (aka America's First Lady of the Blues or Queen of the Blues) was the first to record a Blues song in the 1920s with Crazy Blues being a wild success, selling a million copies in under a year, with total sales of two million. Smith's traveling show included trapeze artists, comedians, dancers, as well as lavish costumes and jewelry. One night in 1921, she heard a sax player in the orchestra pit. It was Coleman Hawkins. His family would not allow him to travel with her; after all, he was only 16 years old. But on her next trip the following year, his family relented.

Trixie Smith 1895 - 1946 - My Man Rocks Me (with One Steady Roll)

Trixie was born in Atlanta in 1985, and became known for her sense of humor. Daphne Duvall Harrison in "Black Pearls: Blues Queens of the 1920s" said Trixie was "a pleasing singer of humorous … songs." Trixie performed on the TOBA circuit. She made her first recording in 1922, for the Black Swan label in New York City, and won a blues singing contest in New York later that year. Though she made a few recordings in the 1930s, Trixie’s career essentially ended when the Depression contributed to the demise of the Classic Blues Singers.

Alberta Hunter 1895 - 1984 - You Can't Tell the Difference After Dark

Alberta Hunter had a very interesting career history. Alberta began her career in the 1920s, enjoyed a revival in the 1960s, and had another come-back in the early 1980s. She ran away to Chicago from her Memphis home at age 12. After a bit of a slow start, she became one of the most popular singers in the 1920s, and was quite popular in Europe as well and was part of a USO tour in World War II. After the war, she returned home to care for her ailing mother until she died. At the age of 59, she lied about her age, drew up a fake high school diploma, enrolled in a practical nursing course and worked as a nurse for 20+ years, until she was forced into retirement. Then restaurateur Barney Josephson offered Hunter a limited engagement at his Greenwich Village club, The Cookery. She accepted and a two-week gig, proved a smash, and people started flocking into The Cookery. I saw her at the Cookery many times, and would take family and friends to see her when they were in town. I ran into Alberta Hunter on the cross-town bus one day, and we had a lovely, intimate chat. She was a fixture of New York nightlife until her death in 1984.

Edith Wilson 1986 - 1981 - Rules and Regulations 'Signed Razor Jim'

Edith was from Louisville, Kentucky. She worked predominantly as a nightclub singer and in the music revues, but she was picked up by Okeh Records in 1921. She traveled the world with the revue "Chocolate Kiddies." She acted on TV and in films. Edith had a recurring role as Kingfish's mother-in-law on the Amos-N-Andy radio show. In the 1950s, she toured as Aunt Jemima for Quaker Oats. She retired from performing in 1963 and became executive secretary for the Negro Actors Guild. She had a comeback in 1973 playing with Eubie Blake. Her last live show was the 1980 Newport Jazz Festival.

Ma Rainey 1886 - 1939 "Mother of the Blues" - Prove It On Me Blues

Ma Rainey was into a vaudeville show biz family. Although her first recording was in 1923 for Paramount, Ma Rainey had been performing for 20 years. She performed with the elite in the industry -- Louis Armstrong and Fletcher Henderson among them. With her husband, Pa Rainey, she formed a song and dance team in Tolliver's Circus. She was known for her powerful vocals and her energetic disposition, which did not always translate to her 100-plus recordings. Ma Rainey retired to her home, Columbus, Georgia, in 1935. She had been a good money manager, which allowed her to build and operate two theaters there.

Mildred Bailey 1907 - 1951 - Downhearted Blues

Mildred Bailey was known as “the plump singer with the high-pitched voice.” She was influenced by Bessie Smith and Ethel Waters, and was one of the first white singers to pick up on the African-American nuances and rhythms. She shared her love of jazz with her brother Al and their neighborhood buddy, Harry Lillis, who was known as Bing Crosby. Mildred played with Paul Whiteman for several years, the Dorsey Brothers, and Benny Goodman. In Whiteman's orchestra, she met and married xylophonist Red Norvo, and in the 1930s, they were known as "Mr. and Mrs. Swing." She recorded very little after 1945 because of diabetes and depression, and she died at the young age of 44.

Josephine Baker 1906 - 1975 - Aux Iles Hawaii

Born in St. Louis, at age 12, Josephine left home and got married, but, quelle surprise, it did not last long. She, too, went from street musician to the TOBA circuit. In 1922, she was a comedy chorus girl in "Shuffle Along." The writers Sissle and Blake took notice and wrote a special part for her in "Chocolate Dandies," and she became Eubie Blake’s girlfriend. French producers who saw her in New York City booked her for La Revue Negre. She became very popular in France as a comedic and erotic performer.

Maxine Sullivan 1911 - 1987 - If I Had a Ribbon Bow

Maxine Sullivan was born in Pennsylvania. She had little musical training, however, pianist Claude Thornhill made her his protégé. In New York, she met and married popular bassist John Kirby. Their first session was a blessing and a curse: It produced the hit record, Loch Lomond, but it typecast her as a folksy-styled artist in spite of her ability to perform jazz and swing very well. She could be cool, soft, subtle and intimate, and then swinging. In 1940, she hosted the radio show "Flow Gently, Sweet Rhythm," the only national show featuring African-American performers. She was also on Broadway and in films. At age 75, she recorded with sax player Scott Hamilton, proving once again, it ain't over till it's over.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe 1915 - 1973 - My Man and I

Gospel singer, guitar player, songwriter, Sister Rosetta (aka The Original Soul Sister) presented a combination of spirituals with early Rock and Roll. She began performing at age 4 with her evangelist mother. Rosetta married Preacher Tharpe in 1938. Churchgoers were up in arms over her secular style, but her secular audiences loved it. Sister Rosetta experienced a downturn in popularity in the 1950s, followed by a resurgence in the 1960s.

Ida Cox 1886 - 1967 - Midnight Hour Blues

Ida (aka The Uncrowned Queen of the Blues) sang in church choirs in Georgia until running away as a teen. She worked her way from tent shows to vaudeville to being a headliner in the teens and the 1920s. In 1923, Paramount dubbed her "The Uncrowned Queen of the Blues." She performed across the country until 1938 when she was a regular at New York's Café Society. In the mid-1940s, she had a stroke on stage. Subsequently, she lived in Knoxville with her daughter. She last recorded in 1961, "Blues for Rampart Street."

Billie Pierce 1896 - 1977 - I'm in the Racket

Born in Florida, Billie was one of seven piano-playing sisters, whose parents were musicians. Billie tickled the ivories for Bessie Smith in Pensacola. She married trumpeter and vocalist, De De Pierce. The couple played venues ranging from honky-tonks to Preservation Jazz Hall. They helped inspire the New Orleans combo sound.

Ethel Waters 1896 - 1977 - Bring Your Greenbacks

Waters was a singer, actress, and dancer. After some vaudeville touring, she moved to New York in 1919 where she recorded with Cardinal Records. She then switched to the Black Swan label and recorded "Down Home Blues" and "Oh Daddy." By the late 1930s, she was a Broadway star. In 1949, she received a best supporting actress Oscar nomination for her role in "Pinky." In the 1950s, she got religion, turned to spirituals, finally touring with The Reverend Billy Graham until her death in 1977.

Georgia White 1903 - 1980 - The Blues Ain't Nothing But...

Not much is known of Georgia's early life, but the bawdy blues singer was in Chicago in the 1920s, although her first recording, "When You're Smiling" was not made until 1930. In the 1940s, she, like so many other women, formed an all-woman band, but they were never recorded. After a quiet decade, she returned to singing in clubs in the 1950s. Her last known performance was in Chicago in 1959.

Eva Taylor 1895 - 1977 - Organ Grinder

Eva (aka The Dixie Nightingale) was one of the first African-American singers to be heard on radio. She was a child actor with a revue that toured the world from 1900 to 1920. After moving to New York, she became popular in the clubs in Harlem. She married pianist/publisher/producer Clarence Williams. The couple were married until his death in 1965, and they produced dozens of songs, music revues, and radio programs. Their grandson, Clarence Williams III, is best known for his role as Lincoln Hayes on the 60s TV hit, The Mod Squad.

Monette Moore 1902 - 1962 - A Shine On Your Shoes/Louisiana Hayride

Monette was never a star, but she had a rich and varied life. She began as a teen playing piano accompaniment for silent films at a theater in Kansas City. She then toured with vaudeville shows before making her way to New York where she became active in musical theater. She moved to LA in the 1940s and in 1951-53 was on Amos-N-Andy. Her last work was in the early 1960s, when she appeared in Disney television programs.

Lil Johnson - Evil Man Blues

Another bawdy blues singer of the 1920s and 1930s, Lil first recorded in 1929. When she returned to recording in 1935, she was bawdier than ever, and kicked it up another notch after meeting pianist, "Black Bob Hudson." It's said she sang in a vigorous and sometimes abrasive way.

Lucille Bogan 1897 - 1948 - Sloppy Drunk Blues

Hardcore best describes Lucille's subject matter: Sexual themes like prostitution, adultery, lesbianism, and social ills like alcoholism, drug addiction, and abusive relationships. She was born in Mississippi, grew up in Alabama, but first recorded in Atlanta in 1923, "Pawn Shop Blues." It was the first time a black blues singer had recorded outside of New York or Chicago. She recorded next in Chicago in 1927. Her recording career ended about 1935, when she returned to Birmingham where she performed and managed "Bogan's Birmingham Busters," her son's jazz group.

Today is the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day, and again we will be featuring women artists throughout Women's History Month.

March 8, 2011 – companion to the Second Blues week about Women in Blues

Ada Brown – Evil Mama Blues
This song is considered the first recording of Kansas City Jazz; Brown was trained to sing in theater; this song was recorded with the Bennie Moten Band. Brown was an original founder of the Negro Actors Guild of America and performed at the London Palladium in the late 1930s. She retired in the 40s.

Lucille Hegamin – Mississippi Blues
One of the earliest Classic Blues Women to record in the 20s, she retired from music to become a nurse in 1938, but reemerged on the music scene to perform and record again in the 1960s. She recorded 77 titles in her musical career.

Adelaide Hall – The Blues I Love to Sing
Best known for her performance in Blackbirds, in 1928, Hall performed often in night clubs, vaudeville and musicals. She continued to perform through the late 1950s, but had a spike in popularity after the 1980s film “Cotton Club” reenergized interest in singers from that era. She appeared in the film “The Thief of Baghdad,” playing the nurse of the princess and performed a lullabye in the film.

Louise Johnson – All Night Long Blues
Louise Johnson’s only known tracks are the four she cut on a trip to Grafton, Wisconsin she made with Charley Patton, Son House and Willie Brown to record for Paramount Records in 1930. Despite Clarence Lofton’s claim that he played piano on the tracks, Son House contends it was Johnson. In a bit of a Blues Peyton Place, on the trip up, Johnson was Charley Patton’s girlfriend; by the return trip, Son House had the pleasure of her company. Patton wrote a song about it: “Joe Kirby Blues” (about the plantation Johnson lived on at the time).

Billie Holiday – Long Gone Blues
Baltimore born singer better known as Lady Day, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000. Her 1956 autobiography detailing her struggles with heroin, opium and alcohol abuse and romance, entitled Lady Sings the Blues, was made into a movie in 1972 starring Diana Ross and Billy Dee Williams.

Mama Yancey – Make Me a Pallet on the Floor
Best known for her partnership with her husband, Jimmy “Papa” Yancey, Estelle “Mama” Yancey was a singer and vaudeville dancer. She was nominated four times for Blues Music Awards as Traditional Blues Female Artist and died in 1986 at the age of 90.

Lil Green – Romance in the Dark
This cut by Lil Green was a Billboard hit in 1940; recorded during a partnership with Big Bill Broonzy. She worked taverns, graduating to theaters and clubs. She died at the age of 35 and some said she was no stranger to trouble, having served time in jail for her part in a juke-joint killing, but Big Bill remembered her for her warm-heartedness and her deep religious convictions, as well as not smoking or drinking.

Blue Lu Barker – I Feel Like Laying in Another Woman’s Husband’s Arms
Cited by Billie Holiday as her biggest influence, Blue Lu Barker grew up in New Orleans and worked with Cab Calloway and Jelly Roll Morton. At 13, she married musician Danny Barker and her most famous cut was “Don’t You Feel My Leg.” The Barkers performed together until his death; she continued until she died, with a recording from the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival in 1998.

Geeshie Wiley – Eagles on a Half
This song was the other side of Pick Poor Robin Clean – recorded for Paramount in Wisconsin in 1931, after which, both Elvie Thomas, who provided guitar and backing vocals, and Wiley disappeared from the music scene.

Kansas City Kitty – Leave My Man Alone
Possibly Mozelle Alderson, who recorded with Judson Brown, a pianist, and as “Jane Lucas” on some of the Hokum Boys’ recordings in 1930. Other possible monikers were Hannah May, Thelma Holmes and Mae Belle Lee, although there is no certainty about this possibility.

Lottie Kimbrough – Rolling Log Blues
Another Kansas City singer, Kimbrough has the distinction of sharing her first recording session for Paramount Records with Ma Rainey. She was nicknamed the Kansas City ButterBall for her large size. Her manager, Winston Holmes, substituted a picture of Lottie’s more attractive sister, Estella for her publicity photos; her talent was as sizeable as she was, but she has few recordings to show for it.

Rosie Mae Moore – Stranger Blues
Along with Staggering Blues, the rough-hewn Stranger Blues by Jackson Mississippi’s Rose Mae Moore was recorded in the late 1920s with accompaniment by the legendary Charlie McCoy (later one of Memphis Minnie’s many husbands) and Ishmon Bracey, who wavered between sacred and secular music.

Mae Glover – I Ain’t Givin’ Nobody None

Memphis Minnie – Don’t Want No Woman
Born Lizzie Douglas, she is one of the most accomplished female musicians of the 1920s and 30s. The scene was dominated by men, and very few women accompanied themselves, much less on guitar. She is considered the most significant female country Blues singer to emerge during the era. She preceded Muddy Waters by a year in using an electric guitar; she won a talent contest featuring some of the best Bluesmen, including Big Bill Broonzy, who said she was one of the best guitarists he had ever known. She married three times, to a Blues musician each time: Casey Bill Weldon (divorced); Kansas Joe McCoy (divorced); Little Son Joe

Rosetta Howard – Let Your Linen Hang Low
Chicago born, she learned to sing along with the jukebox and worked in Blues in the 30s and 40s, a little behind the era of the Classic Blues Women. She made a number of recordings with Harlem Hamfats, including her famous marijuana ode, “If You’re a Viper,” and the racy, double-entendre “Let Your Linen Hang Low.” She recorded with Willie Dixon’s Big Three Trio, but the recordings were not successful, and they served as her last entries. She continued to sing in church, but did not record again.

St. Louis Bessie – Meat Cutter Blues
A ribald double-entendre Blues number, Meat Cutter Blues is one entry into recorded history for St. Louis Bessie, which was the stage name for Bessie Mae Smith, a St. Louis blues singer of the 1930s who also recorded as Blue Belle, and later on as possibly Streamline Mae and Mae Belle Miller. Sometimes confused with Bessie Smith, because Smith starred in St. Louis Blues, this singer was thought to have sung with pianist Roosevelt Sykes. It is also thought that she was in a relationship with bluesman Big Joe Williams.

Wee Bea Booze – Don’t Tell Me Nothin’ ‘Bout My Man
Baltimore’s Wee Bea Booze, who was born Muriel Nichols, began recording in 1942; influenced heavily by Lil Green. Obscure to the Blues world, her talent went largely undiscovered despite the fact that she was also her own guitarist. She moved more toward Jazz and Swing later in her career and is considered to have been an influence on Rock and Roll and Elvis Presley.

Nellie Florence – Midnight Weeping Blues
Nellie Florence is featured here with Midnight Weeping Blues. Her only other known recording is Jacksonville Blues. An interesting aspect of this for those of us in Columbia SC is that her accompanists traveled from Columbia to Atlanta for the 1929 recording session, brothers Bobby and Charles Hicks… better known as Charlie Hicks and Barbecue Bob. Some of the session commentary contains references to Nellie being Bob’s “gal-pal” so perhaps that explains the short-lived career and the scant information about her life.

Mary Johnson – Dawn of Day Blues
This Yazoo City native was born Mary Williams, and moved to St. Louis at age 10 in 1915. She worked with many of that area’s urban Blues artists, indeed marrying one of its leading stars, Lonnie Johnson, a pairing that lasted seven years. She partnered musically with Tampa Red, Judson Brown and Henry Brown. In the 1950s she left Blues for religion.

Vivian Greene – Red Light

Ann Cole and the Suburbans - Got My Mo-Jo Working, (But it Just Don’t Work on You)
This was the original version in 1956; covered in 1957 by Muddy Waters. Her top charting single was an answer tune to Etta James’ “Stop the Wedding” called “Don’t Stop the Wedding.” The flip side, “Have Fun” was ironically, her last song to hit the charts.

Zilla Mays – (Seems Like) You Just Don’t Care
Atlanta native Zilla Florine Mays, known as “The Dream Girl,” who recorded several sides for various labels through her career, part of which was spent as a DJ for WAOK radio with the air name, “The Mystery Lady.” She won a Pioneer Award from the NAACP in 1986 and died in September of 1995.

Mildred Anderson – Doin’ the Boogie Woogie
This song, recorded April 8, 1946, was made with Albert Ammons and His Rhythm Kings. She later went on to work with Bill Doggett and Hot Lips Page. Her career petered out after the early 60s.

Christine Wood – Cool One-Groove Two
One of the few females included in the Honkers and Bar Walkers series featuring swinging sax based jazzy Blues.

The merging of Blues and Reggae took a natural flow on that CD - especially the cut "Jamaican Blues."

It is with great sadness that I report the news of Robin Rogers' death on Friday, Dec. 17, 2010 at 12:40 p.m. She had been fighting a tremendous fight against inoperable cancer, and had been on hospice care since summer, but her doctors took her off chemotherapy last week.

Tonight's Blues Moon Radio program will feature her music at the start of the show in tribute to her amazing talent, her incredible fortitude (in overcoming barriers and challenges in her early years as well as later), and her warmth and ability to attract hundreds of friends and thousands of fans.

Her latest CD is powerful and leaves us thinking about what is important in life - something one considers deeply when one knows time on earth is very limited.

Blessings to all who knew and worked closely with her - our hearts especially go out to her husband, Tony, and the members of the Robin Rogers Band; to Blind Pig Records' employees; to Steve Hecht, her booking agent and friend; and to Mike, Jeri, Scott, Flynn & Pat, Jan, everyone at the Double Door Inn and the entire Charlotte Blues community for all the amazing efforts to help her when she needed you all most.

I'd like to extend thanks to the Columbia artists who donated art so I coud drive it up to the auctions: Pete Holland, HL Gleaton, and Libby Gamble.

We reach out a hand and learn the world is truly connected. Robin, you will be missed but we hold you in our hearts.

I'm giving thanks this year for the usual: friends and family; RockyDawg, Blues Defender; the ability to live in a free country, a wonderful region, state and city; all the benefits of life and as much health, wealth and happiness a person should, would or could have (not going to stop trying to raise the bar, though - no... not THAT kind of bar, silly!).

I am also grateful to USC, WUSC and the fellow djs and leadership over the past 20 years who have fostered an atmosphere of acceptance for a Blues radio show, with me at the helm as host. I couldn't do it without the fine technical support I've received through the years (special thanks to John George for keeping WUSC on the air and to Rick Wrigley for his new tech training sessions).

A key component of what I do is the music side - the talented Blues men and women (living and dead), the PR pros and booking agents; the venue owners and the fans who listen and support great live music (and buy CDs). We have also had great sponsor support over the years (The Backpacker, the Half-Moon Outfitters, HipWaZee, Upstairs Audio, Word of Mouth Productions and the ever-loyal El Burrito and as we always say - we cannot do this without your support.

Most of all, I would like to thank my listeners... regular or intermittent... as I often say, I do this for you. Otherwise I could sit home and play my own stereo - but your continued interest, kindnesses, buoying of spirit keeps me fighting for parking every Tuesday up here on campus! I think my car knows the way without me at the wheel (but I'm not testing that theory). Thank you for your kind calls, Facebook posts, e-mails and letters (yes, I get actual letters and post cards! - Love 'em!). All but two interactions have been extremely positive over the twenty years I've been aboard the Blues Moon Radio Show - to have a record like that seems like it would be unparalleled in broadcasting.

Tonight's show is a bit of a mix of observances...

We'll commemorate the passing of William Clarke, who has been gone for 14 years. His music affected many who are still moved by his playing and influences. Thanks to Alligator Records' Bruce Iglauer, whose posting on Facebook allowed fellow musicians, friends, fans and music lovers to post their feelings about Clarke and his impact on our lives.

We'll commiserate about the passing of an iconic brand of automobile, as GM shepherded the last Pontiac off the production line. Omar and the Howler's "Big Chief Pontiac" will underscore the impact of the line of cars that featured as its logo the elongated head of a proud native Pontiac tribe chief, which was used as a hood ornament for many years. Pontiac also manufactured one of the nation's most popular muscle cars, the Firebird. The demise of Pontiac auto division is as sad as it is unbelievable for those of us who are car fanatics and Americana collectors.

We'll also try to do some good in this world... The Blues Moon Radio Show is proud to help support the Family Shelter benefit. The event is this Thursday night (11/11) in Columbia at 6-ish (cue my Father's disdain about "ish" as a time frame, but more about this in a moment) at the "Hall at Senate's End" ... RockyDawg seeking solace from BigBunny
after hearing his Mommy's operatic attempts.

On another funny note, RockyDawg apparently has broader musical taste than we previously imagined. I was listening to an opera singer on the tube today and Rocky hopped on the bed and stared at the TV intently. When it was over, he looked at me earnestly, so I asked him "Do you like opera?" and he got very excited. I sang a bit, and he stared just as intently at me; as happy as he could be. I wasn't too bad if I do say so myself... but then I "hit a clam"... I had missed a high note that lives where no alto has gone before... even an alto with a wide range. Rocky pulled his head back as if I'd hurt him, then looked back at the TV, then back at me, then he suddenly jumped off the bed and ran out of the room. Everyone's a critic!

Very importantly, in observance of Veteran's Day November 11, we'll also pay tribute to, as well as honor and bestow appropriate glory upon, those who have valiantly served our country in the Armed Forces. Longtime listeners might be aware I come from a military family. My Dad passed away two years ago (miss him so much) and was laid to rest on the day after Veteran's Day.

Daddy was funny, but he also had a lightning quick temper that could rarely be predicted. I recall one Thanksgiving we had gone to visit my brother's family. I'd gone out to the stores the day after Turkey Day to catch a few bargains. Dad called to ask when I was going to swing by to pick him up for the trip home and I said I thought that I'd be there around noon-ish. He sandblasted me, barking in his sternest voice, "Clair! We didn't win WWII by invading Normandy at noon-ISH! What TIME will you be HERE?" I answered "12:07, sir!" I swung into the driveway at 12:06:58 just to be sure I was "on target for my ETA." Ish later became a family joke; so much so that I thought about putting ish on his funeral notice, however I restrained myself, even though Daddy and I had often laughed about his particular teaching technique about timeliness.

Despite the mix of tributes, I guess the moral of tonight's show is:

Do pay homage to those who have gone on before you; enjoy the things and people you love while you have them; forgive people for little transgressions - especially if they are trying their best; never underestimate people (or dogs) - there is a lot more going on than you might know about; and do your best to support good causes. You never know when you might need or want what they have to offer and your help might provide the difference that keeps the good going (please don't fall into the trap of relying upon others to do good in your stead).

BLUES NEWS in the Carolinas

LIVE BLUES - giving thanks
Thanks to everyone involved in any way with the past two weeks of Blues concerts/festivals in South Carolina... the vast array of opportunities were staggering and we are mindful to thank those who planned, produced, supported, worked at, performed at, and attended these events. I was blown away by the talent and the open, accessible venues.

To name some key people: Geoff Graves and Word of Mouth Productions staff; and Gary Erwin, Danny Riddick and all the Kershaw County Fine Arts people. Of course, this could not happen without the quality of performances from the Blues artists themselves.

Wow.

Gone but not forgotten
Regarding tonight's Blues Moon Radio Show, our hearts go out to family and friends of Solomon Burke, who passed away 10/10/10 in Amsterdam. We'll start tonight's show in tribute to him.

Blues Moon Radio has long been a fan and friend of the late, great Nappy Brown, so we pay tribute to him tonight for several reasons... the beginning of Fall marks the anniversary of his death, his birth and the last performance I saw him make; we sat quietly at a table in Camden prior to his show, as old friends sometimes do... and I miss him still. So we will end with a tribute to Nappy.

James Cotton's new CD - just out - called GIANT, has a tribute to his dear friend and colleague, Koko Taylor. While I was not close with Koko, we did bond one night over an impromptu chat about men and relationships and had stayed in touch intermittently. I cannot imagine how heavy a heart James Cotton must have about the loss of his friend, who was such a powerhouse singer and such an icon for females. She showed us we can make it in a difficult business.

Robin Rogers' fundraiser update
As a reminder about how we can help Blues artists while they are still with us, another powerhouse Blueswoman, Robin Rogers, is struggling with untreatable cancer in Charlotte, N.C. There will be a fund-raiser for her (see the Facebook page: Robin Rogers Benefit Central at: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=156948347666993#!/group.php?gid=132068270172379) later this month in Charlotte, as well as other events across the nation. Her band is unable to play and that leaves both her and her husband Tony, who is in the band, out of work. In addition to having no income, they - like many Blues artists - could not afford health insurance, so the bills are staggering. She is in hospice now with no treatment possibilities. Please help as you can.

I've painted a poster to contribute to the fundraiser, and I hope that after the original is auctioned off in Charlotte, I'll be able to offer prints of it for donors. I urge you to participate fully.

WUSC fundraiser updates and requests: keep Blues on the air!
WUSC is preparing for its fundraiser again this semester (my part will be Chicago Blues on Tuesday, Nov. 2 from 6-9) and I'll be accepting donations to keep the station rolling out the best in Blues to you each Tuesday. I'll be singing for my dj supper, so to speak, and my goal is to raise $1000.00 this semester. I thank our generous donors from past years and hope you'll pledge in advance (if you do, please suggest a Chicago Blues artist or tune you'd like to hear).

Blues Moon Radio Show - October 5, 2010

Tonight's show is targeted toward letting Blues fans know about the four-day festival in Camden this weekend...

Tonight's show features interviews with several great entertainers, national and local. Sugar Blue, whose harmonica became a part of the fabric of our musical lives in the Rolling Stones' "Miss You" will be on the show, as will South Carolina's own, Jeff Norwood, who will represent us in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis in 2011 - take your National Steel guitar "national," Jeff!

Starting out tonight's show is an interview with musician Danny Riddick, who has served as technical director of the Carolina Downhome Blues Festival (CDHBF) since its inception - he does the same for the Camden and Cheraw Jazz Festivals (the latter is coming up in two weeks, so mark your calendars). He's going to share some behind-the-scenes stories I guarantee will intrigue you to attend the festival if you are not planning to already.

Camden is renowned for horse racing, its role in the Revolutionary War, for the charm and gentility of the Old South, and, during the past decade and a half, for being the home of one of the best music festivals in the country.

South Carolina's Downhome Blues Festival (SCDHBF) will be rollicking and rolling through the streets, pubs and fine dining establishments of Camden from Thursday Oct. 7 through Saturday Oct. 9, bringing with it the best in local, national and international Blues acts.

"South Carolina sure does have a lot of great Blues acts performing there for such a small state," said Mary Roby, of Mary4Music, a leading Internet resource site for Blues music.

The festival’s success can be attributed to several factors: Roadhouse Blues, acoustic Blues, Jazzy Blues offered across a wide array of venues including a theatre show at the Fine Arts Center. Most venues are located within a short jaunt of each other, facilitating quick transfers on foot between acts and locations; a vast assortment of talented players to choose from; and a generous breadth of dates.

The Blues is a truly American art form and is made up of many genres and subgenres of styles, much like the fabrics in a patchwork quilt. It is the very nature of Blues that many talented artists are not household names but should be. What makes this festival unique is the broad span of talented artists who comprise the fabric of South Carolina's Downhome Blues Festival. The festival features artists who have influenced nearly every type of music heard today as well as younger players who are working diligently to help carry on the Blues.

In previous years, attendees enjoyed gourmet fare while listening to Statesville’s Matt Walsh, whose gravelly voice puts a picture of the late great Howlin' Wolf in one’s mind. Columbia's world-class talent performed as well: Perennial favorite, South Carolina's own "Blues Doctor," Drink Small growled out tunes, while around the corner Mike Nazarenko and Jeff Liberty provided fans a treat with their coffee and dessert and Congaree belted out throaty acoustic Blues with a harmonica chaser on the down the block.

Memories from the SCDHBF last long after the performances are over and the artists have gone. Perhaps the most poignant performance of the past 15 years was the last time Carolina’s own Blues Shouter, Nappy Brown, performed at the SCDHBF. Despite failing health, he was in excellent form when he used his deep, gospel-honed baritone voice to belt out his original composition, “Night Time is the Right Time,” which Ray Charles made famous. Before Brown slipped into the infectious rhythms of the song, which had the whole house on their feet, he stood on the large wooden stage jingling the money in his pocket, sweetly crooning, “Ra-a-a-y Charles, you’ve been s-o-o-o good to me!” while beaming the audience his thousand-watt smile.

When asked, as host of the Blues Moon Radio Show, which acts not to miss, it is most common to hear me answer: "Don’t miss a thing. Try to see and hear them all." Even if you have never heard of an act, you'll be talking about them for years and years to come. The SCDHBF is truly a compilation of artists you didn’t know you needed to see.

cdl - what was your first instrument and at what age?

ML:

I first heard Jimi Hendrix when I was ten years old on the steps leading up to my family's attic apartment. Something in his approach to guitar moved and inspired me. I couldn't believe it, here was a person who could express his innermost feelings through an inanimate object and convey the essence of what I felt it was all about. This just blew me away and I knew I had found my direction. There was no turning back for me. I begged my father for a guitar. My father bought me an Echo semi-acoustic guitar and I was determined to learn how to play it.

I used to play in electric blues bands, rock bands, funk bands, punk bands and bluegrass bands. The thing about playing in a band is the camaraderie among the players. I also enjoy the musical interplay between the players and the various instruments in the band. You really can create a musical landscape with the other instruments in the band and you don’t always know where the music will take you. Musically it can be very exciting.

However, I later discovered that playing solo acoustic blues and roots music is more intimate than playing in a band. When you are playing solo, it’s just you, your guitar and the audience. What the audience sees is what they get. You are up on stage naked, so to speak. You don’t have the rhythm section to move the song along or other musicians to add variety melody-wise. It is a very intimate musical experience for both you and for the audience. For me, playing solo is the “real deal”.

For me, playing acoustic guitar is more real than playing electric guitar. It is just you and the guitar. There are no amps or pedals. What you see is exactly what you get and hear. When you hold the acoustic or resonator to your body and play, you can feel the guitar and the strings resonate and vibrate. It’s as though the guitar is part of you. All the music is coming from your heart, fingers, body, and emotions. For me it is a total and direct connection to the instrument and the music.

cdl - what is one viewpoint you take on Blues that is different from other players?

ML:

I’ve labeled my style of music “acid blues & roots” to describe the combination of all the various styles of music that I’ve played and how I infuse my fiery and adrenaline driven approach into playing my style of blues & roots. I did the rock thing, I did the punk thing, I did the funk thing and, for me it was just a progression to come back home to the blues. I use all of these musical influences in my approach to playing Blues & Roots music, whether I’m playing acoustic or electric. So for me, Acid Blues & Roots is a mixture of blues, soul, rock, punk, and funk and above all else, self-expression. Ultimately, it is important to me to respect the tradition but also make each song my own. Originality is very important to me!!

For me, blues is a healing music. It allows you to express what you feel any way you want. Some people say that the blues is a down music, you know it's sad and depressing, but it's not. The blues is actually a happy music. You may be singing about some bad patches in your life but through the singing you are working through it and passing on a lesson to whoever is listening. Through the telling you feel good and so does the audience. Everyone can identify with the blues. Blues helps us laugh at our troubles, helps us put them in perspective and helps us move on. It lets us know that we are not the only ones that have experienced bad patches in life. I owe a lot to the blues.

cdl - how do you usually write a song - set the scene for our listeners about your process (possibly pick an example from the CD and tell about how you got the idea/concept).

ML:

So far, I have released three CDs “Where’s The Party” (2003), “The Morning After” (2008) and “Blues Intervention” (2010). I am currently recording my fourth CD. It’s also an acoustic blues CD. My approach to writing and playing music is simply to have fun and let the music flow. When I write and record my general rule of thumb is "less is more" and keeping the sessions upbeat. It’s all about hooking up with my friends and having fun. The music just seems to take of itself.

Honestly, I don’t necessarily consider myself a song writer. Musicians like Bob Dylan, Guy Clark and Rory Block are songwriters. I don’t really write songs, I simply make them up. They sort of just come to me and I have to catch them when they do. If I hesitate they disappear. For me, it is sort of an “in the moment” type of thing.

cdl - why are you called "The Doctor of the Blues"
ML:

Fans gave me the name "Doctor of the Blues" because of the approach I take to the blues. The blues is a healing music and I play the blues to heal myself as well as to provide the healing sounds to the audience. I was initially called the "Doctor of the Blues" by a fan in Kingston, Ontario many years ago. As I was playing at a local pub I noticed a young man staring intently at me and smiling. After the set was over I approached him and thanked him for coming to the gig. He told me that he had been seriously depressed, did not feel very good about himself, and that after hearing and seeing me play he felt better about himself. He decided things weren’t really all that bad for him, and saw that there is still passion and caring in the world. He said I healed him, called me the "Doctor of the Blues" and the name stuck. The interesting thing is that he did not know that I had a Ph.D. in Psychology.

MEDICAL UPDATE: Last week Robin was to undergo TIPS surgery. A CT scan prior to the procedure revealed a cancerous tumor which is untreatable. Robin is at home now and hospice has been called in. Tony and family respectfully ask that you do not stop by or call. They need private time to be on their own.

Ironically, I just received Robin's newest CD as I stopped at the post office on the way up to the station tonight. I'll play something from it toward the last of the show.

May God bestow his kindest blessings upon Robin, her family, friends and fans.

Schedule news: the Fall schedule has been set and the Blues Moon will retain its regular slot of Tuesdays at 6 p.m. - remember that Fall slots are two hours (not three, as summer shows are) so get your Blues licks at six and don't be late 'cause we're gone at eight starting next week. Tonight's show is on the summer schedule and will result in an extra hour of bonus Blues music from 8-9 p.m.!

Tonight's theme revolves around the disappointing fact that, while there should always be room for discussion, disagreements, concession and reconciliation in life, if someone volleys during the detante stage, it is best to get out of range and return to discussions later. It's impossible to simultaneously practice diplomacy while dodging bullets during a supposed cease fire - I'm jes sayin'.

Or, as a dear, clever friend often says to me about trying to work something out with an antagonistic person: "There is very little education in the second kick of a mule."

So, what is Clair DeLune's advice if you encounter some mean ol' kickin' mule? You might prefer to treat it with kindness but you risk being kicked to a pulp before you get your third head pat in, therefore she advises caution: "Get outta'tha stall, y'all!"

No mule songs tonight, though! Whew! My hope is that - if you do happen to be going through a bad time of any sort, perhaps the music in the show will help pick you back up. Blues music has a soothing effect, and can be quite uplifting. Enjoy the music... and thanks for tuning in.
