By the 80s, a new generation of suburban bands was giving local music life in lively clubs of another sort, where a flourishing Punk and Rock-a-Billy scene fueled renewed interest in rock and roll basics. DC rockers like Robert Gordon and the Slickee Boys led the charge with rockabilly and honky tonk alter egos in famed East Coast venues like CBGBs in New York and DC clubs like the Wax Museum, featuring real wax replicas of favorite celebrities, DC Space, and the original 930 Club, located at 930 F Street, NW. Guitar stars Danny Gatton, Link Wray, and Roy Buchanan defined a unique style of playing internationally recognized as originating from DC. Rockabilly artist Robert Gordon, Billy Hancock and Tex Rubinowitz, alongside hotshot sidemen with Hollywood names like Eddie Angel, Johnny Castle, Bob Newscaster and Bob E. Rock brought DC artists to national attention and saw the world’s interest in authentic rockabilly into full bloom.

Music on the Rise provides renewed exposure for singers and sidemen who contributed to DC’s Roots Rock music scene over the years, such as Daryl Davis, DC-raised, Chuck Berry pianist, who will be backing up Robert Gordon on the 7th. We celebrate musicians who have reinvigorated DC Roots Rock in local and national venues like Billy Hancock (Fat Boys, Tennessee Rockets) and Eddie Angel (Tex Rubinowitz, Bad Boys, Los Straitjackets), and Ron Holloway the original sax player for Root Boy Slim (Dizzy Gillespie, Susan Tedeshi) will also be part of Robert Gordon’s back up band on the 7th, as well as Gordon himself. The Band is calling itself The DC All Stars following a tradition set at the Wax Museum in the early 1980s. It represents a dream team of area musicians who come together for very special occasions.
